I've been seeing this on a couple of sites, but there's a post rating and/or Reputation system that rewards users for being polite and mature on the forums. Kinda like the Awards system in a way.

You mean things like?

Karma: +12
{thumbs up} {thumbs down}

I wouldn't say Karma; more like:

Reptutation: 15

Yeah, karma is too gameanyone-ish.

Karma also breeds Karma whoring; Reddit is a nice example of that.

A reputation system sounds cool though. Hopefully it gets implemented.

Karma is a bit too Fallout-y if you ask me. It's basically crying out "Karma spam."

A million things are running through my head as I read this topic...so here's an unorganized list

  • I've got a TON of other high priority tasks I want to complete. Not just site development, but making guides, podcast, money, advertising, etc.
  • It's an interesting idea, but I'm MUCH more concerned with rewarding and recognizing users for creating good content (guides, wiki contributions, blog posts, etc.) than posting comments.
  • A simple solution to encourage good comments would be to allow the author of a piece of content to "star" good comments so they float to the top of the comment list the way Kotaku and all Gawker blogs do.
  • Point/karma systems always lead to people bitching about and doing their best to game point/karma systems (like Captain mentioned above, reddit. I don't give a shit about karma, but i frequently see posts from people complaining about karma whores, which is a waste of my time)
  • I like simple/minimalistic solutions, and a karma system screams moderator nightmares and tons of balance tweaking. Maybe badges for 5/10/25/50/100 etc. starred comments?

If you ask me, no reputation-thing is needed. It's good that each user now is equal, noone is a "better" user than anyone else.

On other sites you may have some users with 10k+ posts and lots of stupid "thumbs up". I find that uneccacary.

The way it is here, I really like.

You make a good point Jevrio.

Maybe only Admins and Mods can give out Rep to other users and not every user can do it? Just saying.

Either way, if a reputation thing was put in place, people would start bitching.

The only thing I'd like about it, is that it could make more people posting in the forums, but if people only did it to get points or something like that, it would be wrong, imo.

If it's so important, writing a post saying: "+1 I agree because (...)" isn't illegal as far as my knowlegde goes.

EDIT: The gap was bigger than I thought (removed some empty lines).

This would be stupid. There is no reason to "upvote" people's posts. There is also no reason to want to have your posts upvoted assuming you are a normal, wel-adjusted human being.

By allowing +1 and -1 for posts, it will be like having a Yahoo answers-based forum.

I agree with this. Do I want people posting comments simply to get votes? Or do I want comments on the site from people who want to write a good comment, regardless of the reward?

I don't think voting people up for good comments is a problem. However, keeping a running tally of the points one earns, as Reddit does, is where the real problem is.

There can't really be karma-whoring if no one knows what their actual points score is. So, perhaps a system similar to YouTube. The 'best' comments get voted to the top, but there is no tally or way of knowing what your actual points score is. Thus, people don't feel obligated to post just for points.

Basically, integrate some kind of upvote system to encourage quality posts, but don't make it a meaningless statistic that people feel they have to boost.

Why should people get a score for posting in a forum?

If you're only posting quality posts to get score, then you're not doing it for the right reason.

@Jevrio

Agreed. I like it the way it is.

In other Forums there's some kind of hirarchy like :"What you only have 100 posts? Fuck you I have 10k so I'm better!"

Here we have equality which is awesome :)
