I hear people say "this can happen to any major company" but I've never had to cancel credit cards for 360 or Wii or anything else, ever, especially when I thought I could "trust" the company.

I am actually contemplating selling my PS3 and buying a blu-ray/DVD computer player because of this. Also, Osama must have had his address on PSN.

Sony.. owned. It sucks for their customers, but the company itself deserves no better.

What Sony did wrong was try to cover it up instead of warning people straight off the bat. They should've said it's a possibility someone stole your info take precautions as you see fit. Not all of this PSN closed for maintenance rubbish.

Truth is any company could get hacked but Sony are the ones on the receiving end right now. I do feel bad for their consumer base however.

This isn't a 2nd hack, this is before the PSN was hacked, from April 16-17. And the credit card data that was stolen was from an outdated database from '07.

@MarioDragon

One of Amazon's sites got hacked towards the start of the year, Rift got all of it's player accounts compromised a couple of months after it launched, even the US government lost the personal data and medical history for about 14 million war veterans (which is far, far worse than what Sony lost, which is comparatively easy to resolve).

Simple fact is, no company can guarantee that your data is safe and throwing huges amounts of money at it won't change that, thus they don't include statements in the EULA/TOS saying such (something along the lines of 'We'll safeguard your data to the best of our ability'). You'll find it if you read through them and they aren't legally required to compensate you on those grounds.

Don't like it? Well, there's little that you can do about it, since you effectively agreed to the TOS.

Good for that. As GeoHot said, the 360 and iPhone didn't put tons of information at risk when they were hacked, and he even called Sony arrogant for not fixing this sooner, I agree with him.

Oh yeah and I don't use Amazon or Rift, don't even know what Rift is. I feel bad for the veterans, but an attack on the US government is generally more sophisticated than an attack on a game company.

How ignorant can you guys be.. Seriously, have any of you thought before posting?

'Sony deserves this', 'they have to step up their game','Sony is shit'.. The poster above me even thinks to know how sophisticated the attack was, now that's some special information right there mister mariodragon..

lolz..

Everyone who knows a tiny little bit about computers and electronics in general knows that every single thing can be hacked. There is simply no waterproof security out there.

The pentagon has been hacked and lost vital information, US government files have been stolen by china many times before, EU governments have been hacked,...

Now a company gets hacked and just because it's Sony, and most of you apparently are biased fanboys, it's the worst thing in the world and Sony is the worst company in the world. Good thinking guys, you really thought this one through it seems.

Do you honestly think this could not happen to the 360? Let's face it, Sony just got unlucky that they got targeted and this can happen to any company out there.

It wasn't random. Personally I believe it was some revenge for what they did to geohot.

360 is hacked dude. Microsoft however, didn't get hacked, because they handled it a lot better than sony when their console was hacked.

The nr1 reason for why they FAILED, is cause they have some of the info (dunno how much) in text format. No decryption needed.

Pentagon, and every other agency or whatever you wanna call them out there, most likely have about 100k hacking attempts daily. But they know that '1' ain't a good password. And they get hacked cause hackers want to be known (I've hacked pentagon, I'm da 1337 h4x0r!) or know classified stuff. Sony don't have intel about if Saddam's really dead or not (as far as I know), so that's not the reason here.

Even though I'm a Sony fanboy, I find that Sony brought this on themselves by making the hacking on the PS3 a bigger deal then it was worth. Microsoft didn't make such a fuss about it (for what I know). It's the same thing as Apple with their jailbreaks: Apple made such a deal about the Iphone being unhackable before it came out that almost every hacker in the world jumped on it.

So to be short: Sony made a deal about something that they should have dealt with more subtle.

What I don't get is how I only ever hear "this can happen to anyone." Seriously, that is the ONLY response I get, or ever hear. It's like hearing I watch too much Fox when I bash Obama.

On point. Saying it can happen to anyone makes me think "Captain Obvious; he strikes again." Really. Nintendo, 360, iPhone, everything else has been hacked, but since when have I had to cancel my credit cards, change my passwords, and hope I don't get junk mail now? Not until Sony, and you're supposed to be able to trust these companies. Sorry Sony, never buying from you again, not that it will matter.

The sad thing is that it takes all of 5 minutes to change your passwords, a little longer to get a replacement card, yet people will still complain. I understand it's a pain to do sometimes, but this is what we'll have to live with as we become more and more dependent on debit cards and online services.

On the 'this could happen to anyone' argument, have you ever stopped and thought that it was a legitimate argument (which it most definately is) in defence of Sony rather than dismissing it as a redundant argument? It happens all the time, this case got public attention because we took the service for granted and videogames are considered the modern Rock 'n' Roll by the media.

I also hope that those who have abandoned Sony over this incident will do the same for Microsoft, Nintendo, Blizzard, whoever else if something similar occurs, since you're hypocrites.

I'd love to abandon Sony, but I still have to play DA2, and Infamous 1&2 before I can do that. Microsoft haven't done anything wrong, why should they be abandoned?

I don't only think the info-part is why people hate sony, it's the fact that online gaming nolonger works too. personally I have CFW 3,55 and can't play online anyway, so I don't give a shit.

Companies get hacked every day, but I don't think 77 mill. user-accounts get "leaked" daily. If it had happenned to facebook, or some other retarded service, twice as many would react. Or more.

PLEASE tell me when Nintendo went through this, PLEASE.

Same with Blizzard, Microshaft, Steam even, or any other "trustworthy" game company (I actually had an issue with Blizzard recently so there's a point there, and I think it MIGHT have to do with Sony, or it could be impeccable timing). Tell me when another "trustworthy" game company had a known firewall issue and did nothing about it (as I said, they were called arrogant GeoHot and even other people since then).

I've never particularly liked Sony, the only console they made that has ever been worth buying is the PS2 ($50 Blu-ray drives for PC anyone?) but I've never had a great reason to not like them. Thank you Sony for giving me that reason.

You clearly didn't read my comment correctly I said "If", I did not imply that it has already happened to any of the non-Sony companies that I mentioned. So it's idiotic to accuse me of saying something that I didn't.

Also, you've pretty much made it apparant that you are looking for any excuse to bash Sony, which I might add is incredibly childish and stupid. This place isn't 4Chan last time I checked.

*sigh* My faith in this community has really been starting to waver in these past few months.

Razzler I have such great reasons to bash Sony now I don't have to keep saying I like them all. Guess I'll stop posting here, as it's getting nowhere.

Also, it is not childish, I am voicing my opinion fully and completely, as I am allowed to do. I call it using my first amendment rights. Once again, I have an amazing reason to bash Sony. Besides, it's not like I'm saying Playstation 3 sucks and is complete garbage (it isn't, there just aren't any games for it), I'm saying Sony as a company is terrible. Only thing good they have ever done is blu-ray, but LG had a huuge part to play in that.

And if Microshaft I would probably leave them. Oh wait no I can't do that since Windows is the only OS that runs anything.. Nintendo has hardly any online to speak of, and I can't think of a response of it happening to anyone else since it hasn't really happened to anyone else.
