*sigh* Stupid Fox News. At least they're not claiming killing the pig-cops is violence against animals, I guess.

Fox news is just plain stupid, I'm pretty sure if there was a elmo game from sesame street fox would most likely say that it is harmful to the children and that it will corrupt their minds, and that it is sexist and will lead the child to have imaginary friends and they will never have real friends because elmo talks to a fish.

I go to Fox News for laughs. Its just a game, And if Pimp'n Ain't Easy somehow sees the light of day i want to know how they will react to that.

"In other news, Duke Nukem Forever saw an incredible release today shipping 4 millions units in 24 hours. Gearbox Software attributes this success to the media attention created by right wing news network, Fox News."

Seriously, Fox News is doing a better job of marketing the game than any ad campaign could ever hope to achieve. Pretty much every 'controversial' game that they've discussed has gone on to sell millions. MW2, Bulletstorm, Mass Effect have all sold pretty huge amounts.

Do they not realize this is just a game? It's not real. Women aren't really being slapped around when you're playing it. And if someone does go out and hit someone after playing it, there are deeper issues there.

I wouldn't even be offended by this. Games are not reality. Most people are able to tell the difference.

Unfortunately, there is the chance that the readers of Fox News will believe that it will turn everyone who ever sees the game into the worst rapists and misogynists possible. That's the audience they're appealing to, in the end. There's also the fact that people actually believe the studies which they occasionally put out, which have no real evidence to speak of. It's all well and good for gamers to not be offended, because we know what's up with games, and you're totally right about the deeper issues. But others, particularly mothers who are overzealous about protecting their children and don't understand what could be dangerous out there (that's probably a lot of mothers), won't really know the difference between games and reality, and that's who Fox is targeting. And it's unfortunate.

I guess there will always be a scapegoat. Whether it's movies, music, video games, etc. Why is it never bad parenting? :)

I don't know, but...I would think seeing things on the news that have actually happened would be more damaging than seeing fake violence in a game.

I totally agree, and wish people would understand more. It'll be until when video games are accepted like movies eventually were. Many people used to think about movies much like they do video games now, as only being there to show people the worst things possible. And now, a good deal of them actually do pretty bad stuff, but no-one gives a shit about it anymore. It sucks.

And you're right about the bad parenting issue. That's something that's perhaps impossible to address, though.

One thing to always consider is that an individuals mental health is a great deal responsible for this kind of behaviour (as well as many other environmental factors). A game or film can stimulate this to an extent that causes harm to others therefore in that sense it would be fair to blame the game somewhat. Games obviously allow you to do things that would be morally wrong in the real world and as such one could develop a taste for it. The problem being that, like you said, "most" people can tell the difference. Of course this is in specific cases only and most likely something later on would have triggered the same response. The truth of the matter is however that the number of games played worldwide is in the millions and the number of "game related" incidents is in the tens. Surely if they were that bad there would be a much greater degree of incidents. I'm simply playing devil's advocate here and I completely agree with what has been said between RPGeesus and Jenne.

It is simply scaremongering and scapegoating at it's finest. Plus Fox are morons.

I'm extremely Right-Wing and I watch Fox. Most of you people who are calling them morons are probably Lefties who don't watch Fox, so what the heck do you know?!?! I admit that it is stupid to call a game "The Cause Of Rape". But really, they're morons? That's ridiculous. I'm sure there's a guy with autism somewhere on the crew, but if anyone's the Idiot it's YOU. It actualy kind of scares me that no-one else has said this. Besides, WHAT DO YOU CARE!?!? It's not like they can make games illegal. Also, ths belongs in the off-topic section.

The reason why we (or at least I) care about what Fox News is saying is that it could (and let me stress, this is not guaranteed, but worth consideration) negatively impact the potential impact that DNF could have in its sales, promotion, potential franchise development, etc. If DNF doesn't sell well because of something that is said by Fox News that can't be backed up by sufficient evidence, then that could have backlash throughout the game-development community: Gearbox is seen as offensive, and gets less work, so it suffers as a result; other developers take less risks, quality of games drops, people don't want to buy games as much; the entire game-development community suffers as a result. This is perhaps exaggerated, and doesn't necessarily appear to be the case, but there is always the potential that one bad word will start a landslide of turmoil that could damage many companies and their employees. Therefore, we care because we want the quality of our games to stay as high as possible, and would rather it not suffer from badly-placed words.

This is purely my opinion, based not on my political view (which frankly is narrow anyway) but on what estimate on what the economic backlash. Please understand that we are passionate about our games, and want to protect their integrity. If someone were to denounce a movie for some silly reason, I'm sure large portions of the movie industry and fans of movies in general would arc up at such a claim. So please understand that some of us would become somewhat irate at such a claim being leveled at a game which could affect games in general, particularly when the claims are unfounded. I do, however, appreciate your own passion, and am glad to hear another side of the fence.

Also, I'd say this topic should belong in the Gaming forum, as this is about a game, whereas the Off-topic forum topics typically are not. That's my reasoning.

Sorry for anyone who finds me too articulate or formal.

I shall only change my view on Fox when they present a formidable argument proving me wrong. At the moment, the evidence is against them therefore one must side with the evidence. I care because they are claiming false things and other people are influenced by it. There will be people who listen to Fox and take their word for it when in truth they have little evidence to support their claims.

Also I am liberal but I don't see why you brought that up.

I'm liberal as well, but my views on this topic have absolutely nothing to do with politics. And regardless of which news station made these claims, my opinion would still be the same. It's not about Fox, or being conservative or liberal.

@Jenne I agree its mostly bad parenting.

"It was offensive then and it's even more offensive now,"

How is it more offensive noew when we have progressed in society and expecially in society.

We call them morons because they are shamelessly ignorant of the facts and thrive on sensationalism. In short, they are possibly the worst form of journalism that Newscorp has to offer and they are doing more damage to american culture and its youth than any computer game ever will.

I don't know where you were going with the whole autism thing, but as a young man with mild autism myself, I find that comment incredibly offensive and ignorant of what autism actually is, nevermind that autistic folk can actually have higher IQs than people who don't have autism. Don't make such a insulting comment again please, if that was your intention!

^This.

I too am autistic (mild, was Severe, but I was able to combat it) and I too find that offensive. We make fun of Fox because their reports are false and completely ludicrous in its own right. Anyone who watches Fox for their news probably eats their own brain as breakfast since they can't even understand what's really going on out there. Other news networks like Today, NBC, etc. do a much better job of giving the news when it hits and are honest about it instead of using false evidence to cover the news...
