Red Faction: Guerrilla, the Volition developed third-person shooter, sandbox game set on Mars; quite a mouthful? The game derives from the incredibly popular PlayStation 2 original back in 2001. Although the original was incredibly linear and set entirely underground; one of the main features was being able to drill through walls. This is a main asset kept in this instalment - everything is destructible.Though this is the only similarity between the two. Red Faction: Guerrilla defies linear by being entirely open world, just imagine GTA IV on Mars! All the gameplay and destruction is powered by the 'Geo-Mod 2.0' engine.
Due to your miner occupation, you will always carry a big hammer right from the outset. This is also a weapon that deals extreme damage to humans and buildings at close range; more are unlocked as you progress through the game adding to the damage radius. Throughout the game you will harness the power of more powerful, destructive weaponry ranging from assault rifles to rocket launchers. And the occasional disintegrator. All these weapons are upgradeable via 'salvage' - shiny metal material scattered everywhere after you destroy something. The 'better' the upgrade, the more salvage you need.
Alec Mason plays a miner who ventures to Mars to visit his brother who is supposedly also mining the land of the red planet. This is not the case - he actually works for an agency that's trying to take down and overthrow the current dictatorship from the 'EDF' (Earth Defence Force). The opening of the game shows his brother shot down by the EDF for his rebellious status and Alec immediately wants to seek revenge. It is a classic, clichéd story about seeking revenge but also overthrowing forces at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone.
Red Faction: Guerrilla features a full 16-player multiplayer experience that include a range of game modes and maps. Though the multiplayer is relatively balanced, its missed some vital elements. You can accumulate 'experience points' during private matches with friends. This may seem like a nice addition but you could reach the top level, get all weapons and get the achievements with no work necessary; soulless boosters and achievement whores unite.
