Dead Space: Extraction is a prequel that reveals the events leading up to Isaac Clarke’s mission in the original Dead Space game (released in 2008). Instead of being a third-person action-horror game like its predecessor, Extraction is a rail shooter (mostly linear with occasional optional paths) in the vein of the House of the Dead franchise. The game introduces many new characters to the franchise, focusing predominantly (but not exclusively) on two playable heroes: Nathan McNeill and Gabe Weller.
Extraction tells the story of a handful of colonists desperately struggling to escape from a horrific infection deep in the furthest regions of space. The colonists quickly flee Aegis VII, the mining colony where the infection originated, and head for the safety of the nearby USG Ishimura. Before long, the colonists realize that the infection has reached the ship and they turn their attention toward escaping this nightmare for good. As the colonists begin to fall victim to the influence of the Marker uncovered on Aegis VII, it becomes clear that protecting a new female protagonist may be their only hope for survival.
