Recap of the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards

The Spike VGA's aired yesterday on TV and just like last year it was littered with Hollywood stars, bad jokes, tons of filler and some awesome game teasers and trailers. Just like last years Spike VGAs Hollywood was all over the awards show and it was unnecessary and annoying. This years' awards show was hosted by Zachary Levi the star of the TV show Chuck and self proclaimed gamer. While he was not terrible the constant written jokes and semi rehearsed behavior was pretty dumb and felt like filler. For us gamers we watch this annual awards show for the video games and not the Hollywood pizazz of Hulk Hogan, LL Cool J and Nick Jonas. I was a little interested to see what Charlie Sheen would say but, I was disappointed when it was just some rehearsed joke prior to the unveiling of an award.

Now lets get to the video game part of the awards show, the main reason why I and many people watched it. Most of the awards went well but, I was annoyed that much of the awards only nominated recent games released in the last 2-3 months. Many great games from earlier in the year  were not even shown regarding nominations. Awesome games Dead Space 2, Killzone 3, Catherine, Resistance 3 and Dead Island were not even mentioned. The whole awards show to me seemed unorganized and spent too much time on unimportant awards like character of the year instead of best PS3, 360 and Wii game. While this show was entertaining I would rather watch something more professional for a video game awards show .

Video games have been around long enough to be taken seriously like art and film. A video game awards show similar to the Oscars would be something taken more seriously and in my opinion very necessary. A panel of game critics from all types of websites along with fan nominations would be a good way to award the amazing games that come out each year as well as smaller less known indie games. I think some other group of people should create their own legitimate video game awards show where lifetime achievement awards could be awarded as well as game trailers, interviews and all the other awesome stuff we expect in an awards show. I wouldn't mind seeing voice actors David Hayter or Nolan North hosting an awards show like this. We need a legitimate, professional and great awards show regarding this amazing genre of media that has become every important part of history and not just a fad or something for kids.

Modern Warfare 3 is not the best shooter of the year.  Best selling shooter but not best quality shooter

I didn't watch the show, but Character of the Year = Cave Johnson. The Joker is so blasé.

I haven't played any games released this year other than Battlefield 3 and I think that should of got best multiplayer.

It was a pretty decent show, I thought one of the best parts, however, came during one of the earlier commercial breaks when they debuted a new trailer for Darksiders 2, which is one of my most anticipated games of 2012.

They couldn't have the Best Xbox Game award go to a 360 exclusive? Kinda a silly award name then.
