R3B3LS RANT: GEARS of WAR 3 Review | 9.0 / 10.0 | *SPOILERS*

When Dom died, I thought the scene was well orchestrated. The Mad World music was a perfect offset to what fans might normally expect. But during the following cutscene, I thought the gruff-talking manner in which Marcus speaks (when he says "He's dead. But he saved us.") lessened the emotional impact. Marcus is not known for showcasing his feelings even in the novels or comics. Maybe if the characters had shed a tear or two after the death of a friend, maybe I could have formed some emotional attachment to Marcus and company.

You mentioned that Gears 3 does not do the knife cutscene justice in accordance with the extended canon, and I have to agree. Neither does Gears 3 do any sort of explaining who the new characters are and why they are important. I feel Gears of War 3 is simply pure fan service with its numerous references to the novels. (I still stand by my final score regardless.)

I'll bring up another example. In Act 3-1 during the siege of Anvil Gate, one of the collectibles is actually the portrait painted by Hoffman's senior officer that was killed during the original attack on Anvil Gate many years prior. But the thing is, if you don't check the wikis frequently or read the books, you would never know the significance of that painting.

All in all, I'm still a die-hard fan of Gears of War, and I'm definitely looking forward to picking up the fifth novel.

you're right about the game really being a fan service to folks who have taken the time to read the novels, comics, and engross themselves in the lore.  A lot of what happens in Gears don't have to be explained for those people, but in a way I also feel that great story telling shouldn't be shunned and sacrificed for to the proverbial 'gameplay comes first' mantra.  Don't get me wrong, I definitely don't want MGS4's 'ump'teen hours of cutscenes shove down my eyeballs, but I do think there could be a balance.

And that's just story telling...I'm not even talking about pulling it off with decent acting.

Anyways, game is still great, and I read your review, very well done and spot on.
