Syndicate for PC: Overview

A General Overview of Syndicate's PC Version

As we already have reviews up on WGG I'm not going to force another editorial on you regarding the quality of Syndicate; however I picked up the PC version on Origin which has some differences from 360/PS3 versions.

Things you need to know:

  • Syndicate runs extremely well on mid-range GPU's. My GTS 450 on full settings ran it at around 50-60 frames per second. At 1080p it looks extremely good without taxing your PC too much.
  • The occasionally rough textures mentioned in the reviews are not an issue.
  • Syndicate needs Origin to be running in order to be played, so you're under the thumb of EA's DRM in other words.

Things you should consider:

  • If you want to form a Syndicate with friends you need to be friends with them on Origin. You can't invite people online to join a Syndicate unless you've befriended them.
  • Play Syndicate with a controller. When playing with a keyboard, breaching and DART vision is handled by the Q and E keys by default, basically meaning that you can't strafe while doing either. There are also regular button mashing sequences which are extremely awkward as you try and hammer F. And the mouse control leaves much to be desired which will be mentioned further on.
  • The PC community is likely to be significantly smaller than the console community because of Origin's poor reputation and the DRM. I'm part of a Syndicate (game clan) so games of co-op are easy to find but if you've got nobody you know also playing then consider picking up the console versions instead.

Reported Bugs and my own technical issues:

  • General mouse acceleration is borderline broken. The mouse settings don't fix the issues either.
  • Light Bloom can be even more blindingly bright than on consoles.
  • I have experienced regular lag issues online along with server bugs that made guns disappear from the screen and made me incapable of interacting with objects you have to carry for a mission.
  • Field of View cannot be altered which can be extremely disorientating and the game will get the FoV wrong regularly.
  • Origin is still buggy and unreliable and if it crashes it will pull you out of the game, online co-op or not.

Everything said in the WGG reviews applies to the PC version in terms of gameplay and design. Syndicate for PC is a poor port from the console version that most people with a mid-range card should be able to run at optimum settings and look better than its console brethren. You're not losing much by sticking with the console versions that don't require Origin-style DRM and aren't saddled with the same technical problems.

Good info Adam! Shame to see that a reboot of a PC only game has turned out as an obvious console port on the platform. Still, better textures are always a bonus.

I could say I'm shocked, but I would be lying. EA continues to alienate PC gamers thanks to their implementation of Origin. Not surprisingly, the original Syndicate handled more efficiently with mouse and keyboard of ages past. I checked the Metacritic ratings for the PC version, but only a handful of editors have contributed a review, so it's hard to ascertain for sure if they experienced the same problems as Adam Page (although I wholly trust his judgment).

Can anyone explain to me what mouse acceleration describes though (without me dedicating the free time for a brief Google search)?

@Josh Kowbel

Mouse acceleration is basically how quickly the cursor moves in response to the speed of your mouse movement. If you move the mouse slowly the cursor/reticle will respond accordingly, and visa-versa for rapid movement. This allows for quick turns when you need them and fine tuned aiming when moving the mouse slowly.

Syndicate is 1 to 1, regardless of your how quickly you move the mouse the reticle mirrors your mouse movement exactly which makes things extremely jittery.

Are 'Syndicates' in game clans?

p.s. I added the System Requirements to the post

A brownie point for you.

@Adam Page:

Thanks for the reply. I do not know why I've never heard of mouse acceleration before - perhaps due to my lack of PC knowledge.

@John Tarr:

Yes, in-game clans are called Syndicates.

Thanks, I didn't think to add it, probably because these days the system requirements lab is in a permanent tab whenever I'm using the PC.
